Health coverage for tribal members in Oklahoma and Texas: clinics, insurers and plans by area.

The short answer

Tribal members in Oklahoma and Texas enroll through HealthCare.gov and keep using IHS, tribal and urban Indian clinics. How much choice you have depends on your county: in 2026 Oklahoma County had 7 Marketplace insurers, but Pontotoc County (Ada) had 4, Cherokee County (Tahlequah) 4 and Bryan County (Durant) only 2. Check that a plan's network includes the hospitals near you before you enroll.

Where tribal members get care.

Oklahoma has one of the largest Indian health systems in the country, run by IHS and by tribes themselves. A few examples: the Chickasaw Nation Medical Center in Ada, the Cherokee Nation's W.W. Hastings Hospital in Tahlequah, the Choctaw Nation Health Care Center in Talihina, and IHS hospitals in Claremore and Lawton. Urban Indian programs such as the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic and the Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa serve members of any tribe in the cities.

Texas has three federally recognized tribes: the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe near Livingston, the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas near Eagle Pass, and Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in El Paso. The Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas serves Native families in Dallas. Many Texas tribal members are enrolled with Oklahoma nations and travel home for care, which is exactly where a plan helps: it covers care near where you live.

Find facilities near you with the IHS locator.

Choosing a plan when you live far from your clinic.

  • Check which local hospital and specialists are in each plan's network.
  • With zero cost-sharing you pay nothing at any in-network provider, so the network matters more than the metal level.
  • With limited cost-sharing, your clinic's referral keeps outside care at $0; without it, normal plan costs apply.
  • Texas plans in the big metros were all HMO, EPO or POS in 2026, so out-of-network care is usually not covered except emergencies.
