How the monthly window works.
- You can enroll in a plan, or switch plans, one time per month.
- Coverage starts the first day of the month after you pick the plan.
- You do not need a life event, and you do not need to wait for Open Enrollment.
- Open Enrollment (November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027) still applies to everyone else in the country.
Why the 2025 changes did not remove it.
In 2025, federal rules removed a different monthly window: the one for people with income under 150% of the poverty level. Many people heard "the monthly enrollment period is gone" and assumed it meant the tribal one. It did not. The tribal window is based on status, not income, and it remains in the current federal regulation (checked September 18, 2026). A 2025 law that denies tax credits for income-based enrollment windows also does not apply to it.
We recheck this rule before every Open Enrollment and will update this page if anything changes.
Family members.
Family members on the same application who are not enrolled tribal members can use the monthly window at the same time as the enrolled member. On their own, they follow the normal Open Enrollment and life event rules. To keep the cost-sharing protections, the enrolled member should be on a separate policy. See mixed households.
Want a licensed advisor to check your household?
Check my eligibilityUsing the window well.
- Switch when your needs change, for example to a plan whose network includes a new specialist.
- Fix a bad fit fast. If your plan's network or drug list is not working, you do not have to wait until next year.
- Do not switch mid-treatment without checking, because a new plan starts a new deductible (unless you have zero cost-sharing) and may have a different network.
