Documents that work.
- Tribal enrollment or membership card from a federally recognized tribe.
- A letter or other document from your tribe confirming enrollment.
- An ANCSA shareholder document from an Alaska Native corporation.
- A BIA Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood that includes your tribal enrollment.
A CDIB that shows blood quantum but not enrollment in a federally recognized tribe may not be enough for the Marketplace protections. If that is what you have, ask your tribe's enrollment office for a membership letter.
How to upload, step by step.
- Answer yes to the American Indian or Alaska Native questions on your application.
- Watch your eligibility notice for a request to confirm status.
- Take a clear photo or scan of the front and back of the document.
- Log in to HealthCare.gov, open your application, and upload under the documents section. Write your application ID on each page if you mail it instead.
- Check back that the status changes to verified.
Deadlines and what happens if you miss them.
You generally have 90 days from the notice. You can enroll and use your plan while the document is being reviewed. If it is not received in time, HealthCare.gov can remove the tribal protections, which would mean regular deductibles and copays until it is fixed.
We help families gather the right document and upload it the same day they enroll.
